Preview: Arsenal @ Rovers

By: David | September 12th, 2008

With the international break I’ve no idea which of Jim or I are supposed to do this week’s preview, but since it’s now Friday I thought I better offer some thoughts.

Our defence is going to have to sort itself out if Arsenal are coming to town, with Van Persie, Cesc, Theo and Nasri all tearing it up at the moment. However, Arsenal don’t like travelling to the North West so lets hope we get in their faces.

I’m cautiously optimistic that we may get a result here, but it’s hard to tell what is going on during the internationals. There have been hints at some trouble:

1. We were not very good at West Ham – some errors were of the schoolboy variety.

2. Benni Mac says that everything has gone downhill for him since Ince came in. So why would we not sell him to Sunderland? Why does Ince not want to play him?

3. Ince hasn’t flatly ruled himself out of the Newcastle job. Is he quietly hopeful of an offer?

The last two points hint at problems between the manager and players, and the rumours of a revolt from a month or so ago spring to mind.

I hope I’m blowing this out of proportion.

Anyway so back to the game. This would be a handy one to have new signing Grella on hand, but he’s a doubt and probably won’t start. Dunn and Ooijer are serious doubts. Robbie Fowler will be in the squad apparently (why???).

I sense the lineup could be as follows:

Robbo – Emo, Nelsen, Samba, Warnock – Reid, Mokoena, Andrews, Gamst – Roberts, Santa.

However I would like the lineup to be:

Robbo – Simpson, Nelsen, Samba, Warnock – Emo, Reid, Mokoena, Gamst – Villanueva – Santa

We’ll see what Ince goes with…

as a geordie i would advise ince to remain at rovers where he has a future and owes loyalty. he will never be accepted at toon because he is a pal of weedy wise. a
Ashley and wise dont realize what they are up against. best luck to all rover fans.

Totally agree with #2. Any reason WHY they refuse to play Benni, but signed Fowler? I’d love an explination.
Whether or not we get some points out of this has a lot to do with which Defense shows up, the one that played really really well and nipped a win @ Everton or the one that played like my rec league team last week @ West Ham.
I really REALLY want Villanueva to get some playing time, I think he’s the creative force that we need. My line up:
Robbo (only because I have to)
    Emo Nelson Samba Warnock
    Reid Andrews Peds
    Villanueva
    Roberts Rock
(I love how my roommate-who really doesn’t care about soccer gave RSC this simple, obvious nickname…that I love)

    We may have gotten smoked
BUT I won a signed jersey on ebay through the Van Dash for Ethiopia campaign. If I can’t get it because I live in the US I’ll be so so so angry.
