Who the **** are Myllykosken Pallo –47?
By: Dan Clough | August 15th, 2007
Rovers are in Finland tomorrow to take on yet another club that hardly anyone in England has ever heard of. I have therefore taken it upon myself to try and find out just who they are, and if they are any good!
If you think that Myllykosken Pallo –47 is a bit of a mouthful, they are more commonly known as MyPa!
Founded in 1947, they play in the Finnish Premier League or Veikkausliiga - so named because of it’s main sponsor Veikkaus, a Finnish betting firm - which has only existed since 1990.
They have won the league once, in 2005. Last season they finished 6th in the 12 team league, 18 points behind eventual winners Tampere United. At present they are down in 7th place after 16 matches of their current league season and will go into the game having not won in their last four matches and without a coach; Janne Hyppönen having recently resigned!
Their stadium, the Anjalankosken Jalkapallostadion holds just over 4,000 people and Rovers have around 150 tickets.
Their list of former players has a couple of memorable names. Liverpool’s Sami Hyppia started his professional career at MyPa, making 96 appearances in three years at the club. Another former player also went on to play at Liverpool, Jari Litmanen, who made 26 appearances for Liverpool in an unsuccessful 2001-2002 season with the Reds played for MyPa in 1992. He won the Finnish Cup with them in that year.
That’s about the best I can do without actually learning to speak Finnish!
Mark Hughes reckons this will be a tougher game than Vetra and that MyPa are a stronger side who should cause us a lot more problems.
Let’s hope he’s wrong!
The match is on Channel 5 tomorrow at 15:50.

MyPa shouldn’t be able to do too much to Blackburn, although I wouldn’t count them out. Rovers are smart enough to know what minnows can do at this stage in the competition, and they’ll give them enough respect. More dangerous for Blackburn might be the injury risk - I’ve seen some HARD tackles from Scandinavian teams lately. They don’t mess around up there. I’ll tip Blackburn to win 2-1, 2-0, for a 4-1 aggregate and move on.
