Who the **** are Vilnius Vetra?!
By: Dan Clough | July 19th, 2007
The competitive season is starting early for Rovers as the boys prepare to take on Vilnius Vetra of Lithuania on Sunday.
This got me thinking… Who exactly are we playing? As, like many other football lovers out there, I would never have heard of them if we weren’t about to play them!
Well, here it is!
FK Vetra were founded in only 1996 and originally played in Rūdiškės, a settlement of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. They moved into the city itself in 2003 with the acquisition of their own stadium.
They currently lie 6th in the Lithuanian A Lyga. They qualified for this years Intertoto Cup after finishing third in the league last season.
Vetra are managed by Donatas Vencevičius, a 33 year old former Lithuanian international with 24 caps and one goal to his name for his country. A midfielder, Vencevičius played for a host of clubs during his 15 year playing career. He began in 1991 with rivals Žalgiris Vilnius before moving to clubs in Poland, Denmark, Norway, Malta and Sweden. He finished his playing career at Vetra, making 17 appearances last season.
Players of six different nationalities represent Vetra. Alongside the Lithuanian players are two Macedonians, three Russians, two Slovenians, two Brazilians and a Croatian! So despite travelling to Lithuania, we will still be treated to some Brazilian flair, as well as the gritty Eastern European style!
The 5,900 capacity Vetra Stadium will no doubt be packed in what will hopefully be an entertaining game, with a Rovers win!
The game is live on Setanta Sports from 5pm on Sunday.

FK Vetra is pretty decent, but nothing of what Ekranas and Kaunas usually are.
They do have Andrius Skerla, who is regularly in the starting 11 for Lithuania as well as their starting keeper Vaidas Zutautas, whom I believe used to be Lithuania’s #2 keeper behind Gintaras Stauce, who retired in 2004.
