DISASTER - Rovers 2 (2) - (3) 1 Larissa
By: Dan Clough | October 5th, 2007
We won but we lost. It’s never happened to me before. I’ve never seen Rovers win a match, but come away pissed off.
That was, until last night!
There were no excuses for us as 20,000 fans heard the rallying call and made the trip to Ewood. To most that amount of fans would seem disappointing but with the numbers some expected at the game 20,000 was excellent. They didn’t just turn up either. They sang with passion. Rovers played with less than enough.
Great expectations were held, and then in the 17th minute something happened that nobody had predicted, or even thought possible. They scored. Them. How?
From that moment on we were up against it but with a performance that our side is capable of we could have hammered six past them. We didn’t.
Requiring four we got two. The first, a penalty which should never have been. Dunn knocked it out of play and fell over the keeper. The ref gave the pen.
To be honest it wasn’t a surprise as it was a pretty inept performance from the Italian official. If a Greek player ran into a Rovers player and fell over after it was a surefire free-kick!
Anyway, Derbs’ penalty was saved and he crashed home the rebound. 1-1, oh, wait, no it isn’t. Re-take because the keeper was off his line. That makes sense. No matter though. He stepped up and smacked it into the bottom corner. Now it’s 1-1!
That was the last kick of the first half, Rovers came out all guns blazing in the second. Three goals to get. No mean feat but possible all the same.
Five minutes gone and Bentley’s cross finds Warnock unmarked and he lashes it into the corner. 2-1, 3-2 on aggregate. Forty minutes to go. Two goals to get. The impossible seemed possible.
Forty minutes later and we were out, with a whimper. Too sloppy, not tight enough, not enough urgency.
Once again, this was unacceptable.
