FK Vetra 0 - 2 Rovers
By: Dan Clough | July 23rd, 2007
In a beer filled afternoon I watched the game in the comfort of The Plough Inn in Oswaldtwistle on their lovely large screen TV.
Rovers cruised to victory in a match that resembled a pre season friendly with goals from Benni and Derbs.
Rovers made most of the early running although Vetra had two decent chances in the first half. One coming when Andre Oijer forgot how to head and his short attempted back pass to Friedel was picked up by Severino, thankfully his shooting boots were still in the changing rooms and his effort went wide.
We took the lead in the 29th minute when McCarthy volleyed Pedersen’s cross home from six yards. Unfortunately I missed the goal, due to the fact I was visiting the lavatory! However, three minutes later and another bit of slack defending saw Bozinovski through on goal but, as with Severino’s effort, he shot wide.
The second half was something of a drab affair, made more pleasing to the eye by lashings of Carling Extra Cold, Matt Derbyshire settling the match (and probably the tie) with a low shot from 30 yards. The keeper somehow missed it and Rovers were two up!
Had this game been played at a later stage in the season it is highly probable that Rovers would have smashed Vetra by a higher margin, it was clear to see that Rovers aren’t quite ready for competitive football having played only two friendlies prior to this.
What helped us was the fact that Vetra really weren’t very good! Tugay, who often revels in the open style of European matches, had bags of room every time he got the ball. The Lithuanian’s choosing not to close him down like they probably should have done.
It was also the first time I got to see Maceo Rigters play. Unfortunately I don’t think he even touched the ball!
It was a record crowd for a match at the Vetra Stadium, around 4,000 fans in attendance compared with the previous record of 3,500!

Didn’t see anything but the game. They flicked over to the golf/cricket at half time and full time and almost missed kick off! Couldn’t hear the commentary although I do believe it’s Tim Sherwood doing the punditry in the video. He seems to be at every televised Rovers game!
