Two things we’ve been best at this season!
By: David | April 2nd, 2008Coming from Wales (and specifically Cardiff) I’m constant surrounded by very pathetic attempts by my fellow countrymen to prove that Wales, or Cardiff, is ‘best’, or ‘first’, at something. For years the city centre was decorated with banners stating that Cardiff was “Europe’s youngest capital city” (which it wasn’t), or “Europe’s fastest growing city” (which I’m sure it wasn’t). Finally this year we were the best at something: the rugby!
This attitude though seems to have rubbed off on me because I’ve been wondering about what my beloved Rovers are best at. What separates us from all the other clubs in mid-table mediocrity? Well, I’ve come up with two. Feel free to think of more.
1 - Best Kits of the Season.
If there were an award for this over the last few seasons I think we would have consistantly won it. If my memory serves me correctly, we are the only Premier League team who’s kit isn’t plain, striped or hooped. If there are other exceptions then their kit certainly isn’t as good looking as the blue and white. Even the Bet24 sponsors logo adds something - a bit of green, red and yellow. And our away kits look fantastic too. Whatever possesses some teams to design the most horrible looking away kits confuses me - why do so many choose grey, torquoise, or a colour very similar to their home kit? Our away kit is a perfect contrast to our home kit, and I hope it remains for next season.
2 - Signing of the Season

After much thought I’ve decided that Roque Santa Cruz must be signing of the season. The only other real contender is Fernando Torres, but Santa’s goals have come a lot lot cheaper - Liverpool have paid (roughly) £1mil for each of Torres’s EPL goals. Rovers have paid a quarter of that for Santa’s EPL goals.
Everyone (certainly in Germany) had written this guy off after a tough time at Bayern. He was described by one German journalist as “the epitomy of apathy” and I can distinctly remember Paul Merson saying on the first Soccer Saturday of the season that he would not make an impact, especially after getting those kind of reviews. But Sparky knew what he was going and Santa Cruz has been fantastic for us for a fantastic price. He’s good technically, strong, tall and a good worker too. He often seems to have a smile on his face too - I think he’s enjoying himself playing for the Rovers, which is fantastic. In fact, in McCarthy and Santa Cruz we have perhaps the most cheerful strikeforce in the league.
