Rover’s Hopeful Signings. No. 2: Another Midfielder
By: Jim | April 23rd, 2008Yes, right off the bat I know, not specific. Well I have two in mind but allow me to elaborate. These names are not of the highest quality in some people’s minds, I’m sure. These two players I am hopeful about though I rate very highly and hopefully will bring some much needed things to the Blackburn Rovers that is currently lacking;
-Consistency and depth in midfield. Reid, the Axe, Vogel, Tugay, Dunn… while numerically our numbers are there, I think everyone knows what I mean when I say we need depth.
-A steady increasing attack with ability to hold and defend if needed. Vogel will be great as a holding midfielder, we can use a semi-attacker
-Youth in the aging midfield.
The two players I have in mind: Steve Sidwell and Tom Huddlestone.
Mr. Sidwell has not been featured many times in Avram Grant’s (and I use the possessive loosely) Chelski squad. While at Reading, I was quite impressed with this workhorse. At 25, he should be playing first team football as he’s probably in top form, and though he may be a little rough around the edges, who better than our own Mark Hughes to turn neglect into class. He should feel right at home with other former French National Team youth, David Bentley, who as we all know left Le’Arse for greener pastures here. The price tag may be a bit of an issue but Sidwell has the ability to also start all the games, giving us a consistency and anchoring we need in the central midfield. I have always rated him highly and think his youth, creativity, passing and over all game are exactly what this team could use.
Tom Huddlestone, age 21. Theres a check mark on the positive already. This man could place a ball on a dime if you asked, the passes I’ve seen him make when given the chance and the need have been remarkable. He guy’s got a pretty good shot too. The spark and flair could match up well in partnerships with Bents on he wing and offer another angle of service for Benni Mac and the goal machine that is more commonly known as Santa Cruz. The avalability might not be there, I’m not sure if Spuds are looking to sell, but the man has a good vision and could really make things happen and I feel that with the use of the 4-4-2 that we normally use (ManUre game aside; which was awesome by the way) Huddlestone could really thrive and do great things for us.
Any better ideas? Comment. Agree or disagree? Let me know, you may be right.

Mirror today is reporting that Sidwell has rejected a move to Newcastle in order to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge. Can’t believe that to be honest - was a stupid move in the first place o go there, especially for a talented and yound player like him. Won’t be surprised if there’s a few clubs in for him at the end of the season (heard Villa’s name bandied about, and that’s because he’s a class act, who just made a bad decision to go to Chelsea when he did. Think he would be a great buy to be honest.
As for Huddlestone, well there must be a reason why Spurs want to sell him. True he’s young and English and an excellent passer, but is he really mobile enough for the centre of our midfield? I’m not convinced!

Well I’m glad we’re on the same page when it comes to Sidwell. As for Huddlestone, perhaps you’re right. I know a lot of other Rovers fans we’re a bit worried when we were linked with him last transfer window. Mobility may be an issue, and might the make or break factor on if we go after him.

When i found out we may be making an offer for huddlestone i too was very worried. I think he plays well for totenham and thats where he should stay. Sidwell mad a big mistake going to chelseaand should have gone to a club like vill or portsmouth where he would of got a game.
