Oooh, a little bit of transfer speculation!
By: Dan Clough | July 18th, 2007
We seem to be getting linked with less and less players at the minute but recent speculation has been linking us with a move for Roque Santa Cruz.
This name was first brought to our attention in last Monday’s Lancashire Telegraph and today by Sky Sports.
The 25 year old Paraguay international doesn’t seem to be playing a big role for Bayern Munich and could be on his way to England.
As well as Rovers there are a couple of surprising teams being linked with him, namely West Ham who haven’t really been all that active in the transfer market, as well as Manchester City.
As a name that doesn’t really mean that much to me I’ve done a little research on Santa Cruz and come up with this:
He signed for Bayern in 1999 from Paraguayan side Olimpia Asuncion. There he had come through the youth ranks and scored four goals in four games for the senior side.
However, he has never been a prolific goalscorer in the league for the Germans. His best tally for a Bundesliga season is just five goals - last season he didn’t score at all in 26 appearances.
In total for Bayern he has managed 29 goals in 155 games, hardly a mouth-watering prospect.
I did find this clip of him in action for Paraguay though. He shows great pace and then composure to finish, under pressure, from a tight angle:

I’m undecided about Santa Cruz. He is a decent player but his goalscoring record isn’t brilliant. If we can get him on a decent deal then that’d be ok, but I wouldnt’ like to see us breaking the bank for him.
