Matty Gone For Sure, Givet IN On Perm
By: Jimmy | June 27th, 2009
Well, Matt Derbyshire has officially completed his move to Olympiakos on a four year deal for an undisclosed fee. Hopefully there was some sort of sell on clause thrown in there in case he blows up over there.
While that was going on, Gael Givet was signed on a permanent deal from Olympique Marseille. As per use, for an “undisclosed fee.” Weak. I hate when we don’t get the numbers. Whatever, Big Sam is thrilled.
So what does this mean for the Rovers for the rest of the transfer window?
Well Big Sam has come out and said that getting a striker is the number 1 priority. Obvious. But at least it’s a plan.
Lord Quas and jjf3 hit up the last post with some suggestions, and one player mentioned was Zigic, who has been linked with Rovers before. I never get too excited about links in the press due to the volatile nature of the market, but it still is fun to just ride the roller coaster. My opinion of a £20million transfer kitty still stands; huge chunk of change compared to the £2-3million we’re usually left working with.
What I do expect though is a top striker to be brought in, but not all the money spent. I think then we should have enough to get a decent name Center Mid, which I think is/should be our number 2 priority.
Do you think that’s right though? Should we blow all the dough on one huge striker signing? Or do you think Benni, Roberts and Spit are enough? Let me know in the poll below and explain why in the comments. Discussions are half the fun.
The only thing we know for sure is that the next few weeks will be exciting and anxious times for us, and with my move in to my new house complete and full internet access back, I’ll be here updating every step on the way. So till next time, UP THE ROVERS!
What should our top priority this transfer window be now?(survey)

1) I hope there’s a buy-back option in Derbyshire’s deal. I think he could blow up, and I’d like a “right of first buy” on any sell-on attempt in 12 months.
2) Givet is a steal at the cost I’ve seen (3M pounds), based on what I saw last year. He’s not immune to occasional lapses, but a lefty LB whose also comfortable at CB and is up to the EPL is a bargain at that cost.
3) I love that BFS is talking up Ruud. We need a true game-changer target striker that can play alone or with Benni playing off him, and RVN can be that guy for 1 or 2 years. The question then becomes: he’s cheap in transfer cost, so can we afford the wage cost as well, or accept it in place of total transfer outlays? And while I’m sure Ruud thinks he deserves to stay in Madrid, the reality is something very different when Galacticos v2.0 is being created…
4) I think we’ll miss Mokoena, but I wonder if we have enough guys who are essentially combo defenders/defensive mids who can cover there?? Rather, I almost worry more about our wingers, or the existence of an attacking mid. MGP, as much as I’ve enjoyed watching him, is not getting younger. Then again, I’m still pissed about the US loss to Brazil, and forgetting someone obvious…actually, I think I am, but I can’t think of whom…Posted from

If big Ruud is a possibility then he is definitely worth a shot, he would do a good job. I think that signing him and a young guy like Frazier Campbell would give us a good strike force. I like Roberts but not a fan of Benni, as he is too inconsistent.
Definetly need a long term replacement for Tugay and the likes of Cattermole at Wigan would be a good signing but I’m not sure what the cost involved would be.
