McCarthy Signs New Contract

By: Jimmy | April 10th, 2008

Benni Mac has reportedly signed a new contract that will keep him at Rovers until 2011. The deal is a raise for McCarthy who will now be on £40,000 a week.

Benni mac new deal

I am having some mixed feelings about this. I know it’s not realistic to assume he would have a year this year like he did last year, but this year has been at best- not his best and, at worst - a massive disappointment. Not only has he not scored nearly as much, but most of them have been from the spot. He also hasn’t even been starting lately.

However, this could prove a shrewd business move. By increasing the contract, we could have removed his 5 mil get out clause. This means that Rovers have more say in when he is sold, as opposed to him or his agent agreeing to a new clubs 5 million offer, as he previously had a 5 million get out clause. This allows us to sell him for more, if we choose to sell. It also locks up a high quality striker for a few years. Yes, he hasn’t performed as well this year, but there’s no doubt he isn’t quality; we’ve all seen what he could do. So, I just hope the front office has a plan in mind, or knowns something about Benni’s motivations that we don’t. I think this is a good deal. Agree or disagree? Thanks. I hope you’re absolutely right about this new deal, and it proves great business. Maybe we could just deb this year a sophomore slump.
