Rovers 1-2 L’Pool
By: Jimmy | March 1st, 2010
Rovers fell this past Sunday at Anfield after a strong effort came up just short.
A brilliant move by Liverpool for their first followed by an absent minded Paul Robinson gave the Reds the two goals they would need to take all three points on a day when Rovers just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net.
For large portions of the portions of the game, Rovers brought the game to Liverpool with Reina having to make some key saves throughout the game including two lasers in a row from Peds in the first half and an absolutely unreal save near the end of the game from a Samba header.
In a match where the Reds fell over just as quickly as the ref could give another foul, the Rovers’ build up didn’t seem too deterred by the constant stop/start of a game that had over 35 fouls. The boys had some quality build up as well as some direct play which, to the untrained eye, might have looked like random long balls but really were completed passes a large portion of the time. That long direct tactic as well as the danger from longer free kicks lofted into the area had Reina and the Reds confused and on the backfoot.
However, with just Niko up front and Junior, Peds and Dioufy in support, our blue and whites just couldn’t convert on the chances for a finished product, leaving Big Sam frustrated.
“If we had a goalscorer we would have won, it is that simple. Chances came and went and we didn’t convert them and unusually we had more chances than Liverpool today.”
Sam told SkySports.
Still, taking a point would be a bonus usually from Anfeild, however it felt more like 3 points dropped after watching this match. The loss didn’t leave us in terrible position though. Sitting in 12th, 7points about 13th West Ham, and only 6 points back of 8th place Birmingham, Rovers really controll their own destiny as he hit the final stretch of the season. A nice run of wins would leave us in a pretty good finishing spot, with the money from a higher placement and the Benni sale going to bolster the squad for the next campign.
But before we get too ahead of ourselves, lets get some wins under our belt.
PS: Can anyone explain or justify to me why KEITH ANDREWS is taking our penalties? Please, please let me know. Points for anyone who can. Thanks.
